ADVERTISING SHAPES THE WORLD

FROM JULY 24th 2020

THEMATIC EXHIBITION AT SUTU PALACE

ADVERTISING SHAPES THE WORLD – A JOURNEY THROUGH THE BUCHAREST MUSEUM’S COLLECTIONS

The thematic exhibition will be presented between July 24 and September 13, 2020, at the Suțu Palace. The Museum of Bucharest, through its heritage collections, offers the general public a nostalgic journey, an expression of past times focused around advertisements, advertised objects and propaganda.

Presented in an accessible way, advertising reaches all social categories, being a true mirror of society. Advertising is the form that combines the desires and trends of society, human aspirations in terms of consumption, luxury, eating and hygiene habits, diseases and treatments, but also about ignorance, credulity and the creation of illusions. Advertisement aims to persuade, to convince, and its themes and the techniques reveal a part of history.

Many of the featured exhibits have traveled through time – they were a revelation in the lifestyle of our grandparents’ generation and reflect how everyday life has been transformed.

Propaganda – another similar technique, difficult to differentiate, a visual presentation used to change the attitudes of the public about a particular person or subject, is considered one of the strongest weapons in politics, used to influence public opinion, disseminated to or by persons, or by commercial, religious, political organizations.

The exhibition will capitalize on art objects from the Bucharest Museum’s collections: Glass-porcelain decorative art, Miscellaneous, Prints, Photographs, Plastic Art, Textiles and Clothing Accessories, objects that will be made known for the first time to the visiting public.
