THEMATIC EXHIBITION AT THE THEODOR AMAN MUSEUM

AMAN – LINE, POINT

Theodor Aman – Draftsman

The Bucharest Municipality Museum invites the public to enjoy the privilege of encountering a selection of drawings by the artist Theodor Aman from the collection of the Theodor Aman Museum, starting on February 6, 2026, when approximately 20 drawings and two watercolor sketches will be presented to visitors.

The extremely sensitive nature of the technique necessitates very rare and short-term display, which makes an exhibition of drawings (especially older ones) a highly uncommon event for lovers of the visual arts—an event avidly sought after and admired worldwide. This curiosity is rooted in the desire to penetrate the “laboratory” of the work of art, where any visual phenomenon has the chance to metamorphose into a masterpiece, and where any masterpiece, regardless of the medium in which it is presented (graphic art, painting, sculpture, architecture), is based on the preparatory drawing—originating from a point and arriving at a line, straight or sinuous, which, when skillfully guided, generates any possible or impossible form. This is also the argument behind the title of the exhibition, Aman – Line, Point, through which viewers are given the opportunity to enter Aman’s “laboratory” and to perceive, at least partially, the genesis of a work of art.

Moreover, the drawings proposed for exhibition reveal a relaxed, very sincere facet, uncensored by the demanding filter of the academic painter, highlighting the spirit of observation, the ability to extract the essential, and the ineffable quality of the line, which gives shape to thought and brings to light the artist’s intimate nature, confessed in the trace left by pencil on paper. Aman’s supple and refined line alters the order of the perceptible world, with familiar materiality giving way to the force of imagination, which becomes the creator and guide of a suggested, intuited reality, operating under the coordination of memory, sensations, and synthesis.

Many of the drawings are fleeting sketches, snapshots meant to recall a moment; others are preparatory studies or versions in another technique of well-known paintings. What they all share, however, is the fact that each can be considered a work of art in its own right.

The exhibition AMAN – LINE, POINT. Theodor Aman – Draftsman complements the Repertoire of Drawing and Watercolor of the “Theodor Aman” Museum, authored by Greta Șuteu and published by the Bucharest Municipality Museum Press in 2024.
