From 6 February 2026
TEMPORARY EXHIBITION AT THE THEODOR AMAN MUSEUM
AMAN – LINE, POINT
Theodor Aman – Draftsman

The Bucharest Municipality Museum invites the public to enjoy the privilege of encountering a selection of drawings by Theodor Aman from the collection of the Theodor Aman Museum, starting on 6 February 2026, when approximately 20 drawings and two watercolor sketches will be presented to visitors.
The extremely sensitive nature of the medium necessitates very rare and short-term display, which makes an exhibition of drawings, especially older ones, a truly exceptional event for lovers of the visual arts, eagerly sought after and admired worldwide. This fascination stems from the desire to enter the “laboratory” of the work of art, where any visual phenomenon has the potential to transform into a masterpiece, and where every masterpiece, regardless of the medium in which it is presented (graphic art, painting, sculpture, architecture), is rooted in preparatory drawing, beginning with a point and developing into a line, straight or sinuous, which, when skillfully guided, generates every possible and impossible form. This is precisely the rationale behind the title of the exhibition Aman – Line, Point, through which viewers are given the opportunity to enter Aman’s “laboratory” and to perceive, at least in part, the genesis of a work of art.
Moreover, the drawings selected for display reveal a relaxed, highly sincere facet of the artist, uncensored by the exacting filter of the academic painter. They highlight his keen observational spirit, his ability to extract the essential, and the ineffable quality of the line, which gives shape to thought and brings to light the artist’s intimate nature, revealed in the trace left by pencil on paper. Aman’s fluid and refined line alters the order of the perceptible world, allowing familiar materiality to give way to the power of imagination, which becomes the creator and guide of a suggested, intuited reality, operating under the coordination of memory, sensation, and synthesis.
Many of the drawings are fleeting sketches, instant records meant to preserve the memory of a moment; others are preparatory studies or versions in a different medium of well-known paintings. What they all share, however, is the fact that each may be considered a work of art in its own right.
The exhibition AMAN – LINE, POINT. Theodor Aman – Draftsman complements the Repertory of Drawing and Watercolor of the “Theodor Aman” Museum, authored by Greta Șuteu and published by the Muzeul Municipiului București Publishing House in 2024.
