In the Infinity of Words. Ileana and Romulus Vulpescu

The Bucharest Municipality Museum invites you, starting March 6th, 2026, at Suțu Palace, to step into a universe marked by erudition, a passion for words, and a rare intellectual elegance: the world of spouses Ileana and Romulus Vulpescu. This exhibition, born of a generous donation received by the museum, offers the public an encounter beyond the pages of books, in the very heart of their creative space.

The exhibition recreates the intimate atmosphere of the Vulpescu household, a place where everyday life and cultural creation merged for decades. Visitors will be able to discover personal belongings that once belonged to them, photographs capturing fragments of their lives, and manuscripts that reveal their creative workshop.

The figure of Romulus Vulpescu (1933–2012) is honored through the lens of his overflowing complexity: poet, prose writer, exceptional translator, and man of the theater. From poetry volumes such as Arte & meserie (1979) and the prose work Exerciții de stil, to his remarkable translations of François Villon, Rabelais, and Dante Alighieri, his activity reflects a life devoted to the Romanian language and to universal values. The exhibition also highlights his multifaceted work in radio, television, and theater, where he was active as a director and screenwriter of memorable productions.

Alongside him, the personality of Ileana Vulpescu (1932–2021) completes this cultural portrait. Known and loved by the general public for the depth and sensitivity of her prose, Ileana Vulpescu succeeded in capturing the subtle nuances of the human soul in her works, while also being a translator of great refinement.

Through the display of published books and working documents, the exhibition is not merely a presentation of objects, but a story about devotion to culture and about a relationship that transformed “our armor — the book” into a way of existence. We invite you to discover this emotional and cultural heritage in an exhibition that celebrates the memory of two of Bucharest’s most respected intellectuals.
