STARTING OCTOBER 2nd 2020
THEMATIC EXHIBITION AT THE SUȚU PALACE
HANS MATTIS-TEUTSCH. UNDER THE SIGN OF THE AVANT-GARDE
Organized by the Brașov Art Museum together with the Bucharest Municipality Museum – the Art Department, the exhibition will be opened from October 2nd to November 1st 2020 at the Suțu Palace, 2 I.C. Brătianu Street.
The exhibition “Hans Mattis-Teutsch. Under the Sign of the Avantgarde” has been itinerated at the Ferenczy Szentendre Museum (2015), The Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca (2017), RCI Vienna and the County Art Museum in Baia Mare (2018). The exhibition’s curator is Radu Popica.
Starting with symbolist depictions of nature, with flowing landscapes, going through the expressionist experience of The Spiritual Flowers and the constructivist experience of mural decoration projects, oscillating between the figurative and non-figurative, Mattis-Teutsch proves to be an artist who was sensible to, but not enslaved by, European art innovations, as he interpreted them in his own manner.
A complex creative personality, Mattis-Teutsch was a representative artist of Central Europe avant-garde, working as a sculptor, painter, drawer, art theorist and poet. The BMM exhibition will reunite works by Hans Mattis-Teutsch created in different techniques: woodcutting, watercolors, pastels, easel painting and small statuary.
The exhibition follows the artist’s evolution from 1917 to 1932, a time when he was an active member of avant-garde movements and magazines in Hungary (MA), Germany (Der Sturm) or Romania (Contimporanul or Integral). During 1924-1932, Mattis-Teutsch was an active presence in Bucharest’s artistic life, exhibiting together with Miliţa Pătraşcu, Marcel Iancu, M.H. Maxy, Corneliu Michăilescu or Victor Brauner.
The Art Department of the Bucharest Municipality Museum continues its endeavors of bringing the public’s attention to the Romanian artists’ activity within avant-garde movements and the exhibition “Hans Mattis-Teutsch. Under the Sign of the Avant-garde” comes to complete the exhibition of paintings in the patrimony of the Bucharest Municipality Pinacotheque: Avant-garde – Rearguard. From the premises of Romanian avant-garde to socialist realism, open from October 2nd 2018 to September 22nd 2019.
